The Core i7-6900K could be considered Ryzen 1800X’s closet rival in terms of spes, but AMD topped Intel both on clock speeds and undoubtedly price. Ryzen is roughly half the price of the 6900K, while Intel does offer more L3 cache, 20MB compared to Ryzen’s 16mb. There are more details about the new CPU that will be revealed soon such as the Extended Frequency Range, or XFR.

AMD is calling its Ryzen 7 1700X as an alternative to Intel’s i7-6800K. AMD has an advantages in the core count, price (approximately $40 lower), and with a slight clockspeed advantage on turbo speeds – 3.8 GHz in comparison to 6800K’s 3.6 GHz, although both have a base speed of 3.4 GHz.

The Ryzen 1700 has a base clock of 3.0 GHz and a maximum turbo clock speed of 3.7 GHz and competes with Intel’s 4-core/8-thread i7-7700K. The 1700 CPU costs around $20 lower and two times the cores/threads. The main difference is the 7700K clocks in at 4.5 GHz compared to the 1700’s 3.7 GHz. However, AMD has a lower power consumption advantage where the 1700 sports 65W TDP, one of the lowest power ratings on an 8-core consumer processor.

Preorders are now available for the processors. While it’s still too early to tell how these processors will perform in the wild, the embargo will be lifted on March 7. It’s still not clear whether the upcoming Xbox Scorpio will utilize AMD’s new chip sets.
